Why convert TIFF to GIF?
Scanners and print workflows love TIFF, but Chrome, Edge and Firefox can't show it and email chokes on the size. GIF works in every chat app and email client, which is still the simplest way to share a small graphic.
TIFF vs GIF
| TIFF | GIF | |
|---|---|---|
| Full name | Tagged Image File Format | Graphics Interchange Format |
| Type | Raster (pixels) | Raster (pixels) |
| Compression | Lossless | Lossless, 256 colours |
| Transparency | Yes | Yes |
| Animation | No | Yes |
| Opens in | Safari, desktop and print software; not Chrome, Edge or Firefox | Every device, browser and app |
| File size | Very large | Small for graphics, large for photos |
| Best for | Print, scanning, archiving | Short animations, simple graphics |
- GIF can show only 256 colours, so photos may look banded or grainy. It suits simple graphics best.
- GIF transparency is on or off for each pixel, so soft, semi-transparent edges become hard.
- Only the first page of a multi-page TIFF is converted, and a TIFF with 16 bits per channel is saved at 8 bits.

TIFF to GIF, answered
All FAQsIs my TIFF file uploaded to convert it?
No. The conversion runs in your browser, on your own device. Your TIFF file is not uploaded, and no account is needed.
Will converting TIFF to GIF reduce quality?
It can. GIF has only 256 colours, so photos may show banding. Graphics with few colours look the same. A TIFF with 16 bits per channel is saved at 8 bits.
What's the difference between TIFF and GIF?
TIFF (Tagged Image File Format) is a lossless raster format mostly used for print, scanning and archiving. GIF (Graphics Interchange Format) is lossless but limited to 256 colours, supports transparency, and is mostly used for short animations and simple graphics.
Can I convert many TIFF files at once?
Yes. Add up to 50 TIFF files at a time. Each converted file uses one of your 3 free conversions, and they are converted one after another in your browser; Download all saves each GIF as its own file. The Filo app is free for life, with no daily limit.
